State Vets Home Earns Top Scores for Care

Fergus Falls, Minn. – The Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls has received perfect ratings in recent reviews by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) during their respective annual surveys of the Home.

Receiving the highest rating from both agencies is a significant accomplishment for the Home.  Although the Fergus Falls Veterans Home has a history of good survey results, this is the first time since the home was built in 1997 that it has received perfect scores on consecutive surveys. The statewide average for long-term care facilities is 10 citations from MDH, the federal average is unavailable.

“This is a wonderful reflection of the quality care provided at the Fergus Falls Home,” said Gilbert Acevedo, Deputy Commissioner of Veteran Health Care, Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.

Both the VA and MDH survey teams annually review every aspect of the Home’s operations and care.  From direct care activities, such as bathing and medication delivery to accounting and records, every aspect of the Home’s operation is examined.

The VA has implemented a new survey process to standardize measurements of care across all Veterans Homes nation-wide. As part of this new process the Ascellon Corporation was hired to perform and manage the survey process. Their team spent three days following employees, reviewing records and interviewing staff.

MDH conducts yearly surveys at care facilities across the state to ensure the quality care and safety of residents.

“We are proud of the hard work and dedication of our staff, which has created a safe, healthy and positive home. This is a place where we are proud to serve our nation’s heroes,” said Jon Skillingstad, Administrator of the Fergus Falls Veterans Home.
