Clarissa Veterans Memorial

There is a Memorial Park located in Clarissa on Main St. This park was started in Clarissa in the early 1900’s.  The bandstand was built on a grassy area in the center of town.  A local group of men held a band concert there on Saturday nights in the summer.  Since that time it has been used occasionally for similar musical events during the summer celebration.

After World War II the members of the local Fire Dept. and the American Legion Post built the memorial to the veterans that had served in the wars.  Over the years they have added veterans of the Korean conflict and Vietnam.  A local garden club keeps plants of flowers there during the summer months.

In the mid 1980’s a group entered a competition for “Take Pride In America” and it was named ‘Memorial Park’.  At that time the bandstand was renovated and the Memorial plaque was updated.  Also the mural was painted on the side of the municipal building (this houses the Post Office and the City Hall) that is on the east side of the park.  The group won an award for the park and a delegation attended the awards ceremony in Washington DC at the White House. At that time President Reagan presented the delegation with the award.
