Appleton Veteran Memorials
The City of Appleton has three Veteran memorials:
Flags of Honor
Located along Highway 7 on the south entrance to Appleton, the flags serve as a field of honor to the men and women who have served our country, preserving the freedoms of all. With more than 200 flags dedicated to veterans, every patriotic holiday 100 flags are displayed to honor veterans. The current count of more than 200 flags are rotated each holiday.
Veterans Park
Located in the center of the business district, the park displays numerous planting of flowers throughout the growing season. An American Flag is displayed at the entrance of the park.
Streets of Honor Memorial
Located on the north end of main street of the business district, the seven-pillar granite memorials honors all branches of the military: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and the Army National Guard. The focal point of the memorial is the center pillar which is created from gray or military granite. This pillar is 8 ½ feet high and 5 feet wide and has a rounded top with an eagle engraved onto the front face of the pillar. The names of 36 soldiers from Appleton who made the supreme sacrifice of their lives are also engraved on the center pillar. World War II has 31 names, Korean War on one name, Vietnam War has three names and the Iraq War has one name. An American flag is flown behind the center pillar.
Matching gray-military granite pillars flank the center pillar with three pillars 6 feet high and 4 feet wide on each side. Each pillar displays the respective military branch emblem carved onto the front face of each pillar. The corresponding military flag of each military branch is flown behind each respective pillar and the Minnesota State Flag is displayed for the Army National Guard. Recessed lighting illuminates each pillar and flag. This memorial is established on an elevated river bank and overlooks the Pomme de Terre River.
In 1947, the streets in Appleton were renamed to reflect the sacrifices of life of soldiers from Appleton. Thielke Avenue, Miles Street, Schlieman Avenue, Edquist Street, Ronning Avenue…..the list goes on. This practice has been continued to this present day and the citizens of Appleton believe this is the only community within the United States to maintain this tradition.
