American Legion
The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, war-time veterans organization. A community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members -- men and women -- in nearly 15,000 American Legion Posts worldwide. These Posts are organized into 55 Departments -- one each for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the Philippines.
AMVETS
For more than 60 years, we in AMVETS have taken to heart the credo of service set forth by our organization’s founding fathers. In so doing, we endeavor to provide our fellow veterans with the type of support they truly deserve. This outreach effort takes many forms, from the professional advice our service officers offer on earned veterans benefits to our legislative efforts on Capitol Hill to the work done by our hospital volunteers. Other AMVETS members involve themselves in a range of initiatives aimed at contributing to the quality of life in their local communities.
Beyond the Yellow Ribbon
A comprehensive approach to providing services, training and resources to Service Members and their families throughout the deployment cycle. Beyond the Yellow Ribbon training is open to all branches of the military. Even its name, Beyond the Yellow Ribbon is a reminder that the supporting military Service Members cannot end when they return home from deployment and the yellow ribbons are untied; but continues throughout the process of reintegration.

Honor Flight Network
Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices. We transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill.
Of all of the wars in recent memory, it was World War II that truly threatened our very existence as a nation—and as a culturally diverse, free society. Now, with over one thousand World War II veterans dying each day, our time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out.

Library of Congress - Veterans History Project
The Veterans History Project relies on volunteers to collect and preserve stories of wartime service.
In addition, those U.S. citizen civilians who were actively involved in supporting war efforts (such as war industry workers, USO workers, flight instructors, medical volunteers, etc.) are also invited to share their valuable stories.

Mesothelioma Association
There are approximately 23,442,000 military veterans living in the United States. Many of these individuals, who dedicated their lives to serving the United States and its people, have been faced with serious medical conditions in connection with their service. Mesothelioma is one of these conditions, having afflicted many veterans, from those who served in World War II, to Vietnam, and potentially are even serving today.

Military Affairs
The Department of Military Affairs consists of the National Guard military forces of the State of Minnesota, the Office of the Adjutant General, civilians employed for administration and maintenance and the National Guard military installations.
The Minnesota National Guard is under state jurisdiction and can be used by the Governor to assist the state during disasters and other state emergencies. In times of war, Minnesota National Guard Soldiers and Airmen can be called into federal active service with the President of the United States as commander in chief.

Military Order of the Purple Heart
The PURPLE HEART is awarded to members of the armed forces of the U.S. who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy and posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds received in action. It is specifically a combat decoration.
An organization now known as the "Military Order of the Purple Heart," was formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of all who have received the decoration. Composed exclusively of Purple Heart recipients, it is the only veterans service organization comprised strictly of "combat" veterans.

Military Transition: Key to Career Success
Key to Career Success Web site is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor through the CareerOneStop project as part of the department's assistance to service members, military families, employers and the workforce staff serving them. Much of the content in Key to Career Success is based on U.S. Department of Labor-sponsored resources and has been customized to meet the needs of recently separated military personnel. These resources include:

Minnesota Association of County Veteran Service Officers
Veteran Service Officers are locally-funded agencies established in 1946 to assist veterans and their families in obtaining benefits and services accrued through military service.

Minnesota Dept. of Employment and Economic Development
Many state and federal programs exist to ensure that Minnesota veterans get specialized employment and training services. Minnesota's Veterans Employment Representatives work with local businesses and veterans to provide:
- Individual, intensive employment assistance
- Job search information, resume assistance, cover letters, job search videos
- Eligibility determination for special programs and services to employ and train veterans. Veterans with disabilities from the military may apply for vocational rehabilitation services.
- Information and assistance on licensure, certification and apprenticeships
- Information on veterans employment benefits, rights and preferences
- Instruction and training on using the internet for job searches
- Information on how to apply for Federal, State and County positions
- Direct referral to job openings

To qualify for services, customers must meet the definition of an eligible veteran and register with a WorkForce Center.
Minnesota Dept. of Health
The Department of Health is committed to increasing awareness of public health services in order to assure the needs of our soldiers and their family members are being met.
The department offers a Military County Reference Guide that provides county contact information for numerous programs and services for Minnesota's military members, veterans and family members. There are also statewide resources, including VA locations, as well as Tribal Government information at the front of this guide. This document will be continually updated.

Minnesota Dept. of Human Services
The Minnesota Department of Human Services, along with county and tribal social service agencies, provides a variety of services to help families, seniors and individuals with disabilities meet their basic needs. The department works to help those on government assistance become self-sufficient as quickly as possible. The department also makes sure that a strong but limited safety net is in place for the most vulnerable Minnesotans.
Most of Minnesota’s human services programs are administered locally, at the county and tribal level. DHS employees work closely with employees from Minnesota's county and tribal social services agencies, who provide most of the direct services to Minnesotans in need. Returning veterans and their families should access most human services programs through their county, tribe, or regional human services, social services or family services offices. A list of county human services programs and their phone numbers is available on their web site.

Minnesotans' Military Appreciation Fund
The Minnesotans' Military Appreciation Fund was founded by Minnesota business and community leaders.
Founded by area business and community leaders, MMAF calls on citizens to show their support and appreciation for the sacrifices made by Minnesota military personnel deployed in combat zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan since September 11, 2001. National Coalition for Homeless Veterans
NCHV is the resource and technical assistance center for a national network of approximately 250 community-based service agencies that provide emergency and supportive housing, food, health services, job training and placement assistance, legal aid and case management support for more than 150,000 homeless veterans each year.
Nationwide, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that about 250,000 veterans are homeless on a given night, and more than 500,000 experience homelessness over the course of a year. Many of these veterans fought in the Vietnam era, although America's homeless veterans have served in every war since World War II, including the current conflicts.

Of the 25 million veterans currently alive, nearly three of every four served during a war or an official period of hostility. About a quarter of the nation's population -- approximately 70 million people -- are potentially eligible for VA benefits and services because they are veterans, family members or survivors of veterans.
The Minneapolis VA Medical Center is pleased to announce the development of the Medical Foster Home Program to reach the growing needs of the veteran population.

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)
The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, with its Auxiliaries, includes 2.4 million members in approximately 9,000 Posts worldwide.
Its mission is to "honor the dead by helping the living" through veterans' service, community service, national security and a strong national defense.
Vietnam Veterans of America
Founded in 1978, Vietnam Veterans of America, Inc. is the only national Vietnam veterans organization congressionally chartered and exclusively dedicated to Vietnam-era veterans and their families. VVA's goals are to promote and support the full range of issues important to Vietnam veterans, to create a new identity for this generation of veterans, and to change public perception of Vietnam veterans.
