The applicant's separation papers must indicate that s/he was awarded the Purple Heart, or the applicant must have an amended document from the Veteran's Administration.

The 2010 legislative session amended eligibility to include active duty members who have the Purple Heart medal. Previously the plate was only eligible to Veterans.

Medal of Honor license plates are issued to the recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor. Original, duplicate, or replacement plates are issued free of charge, and no registration tax is due.  Only one set of plates may be issued.  An application may only be made at the time of vehicle registration.

The applicant must have been a member of the military forces of the United States and was captured, separated and incarcerated by an enemy of the United States during a period of armed conflict.  The application must be verified by the Commissioner of Veteran's Affairs, whose signature must appear in Section D of the application form.

Global War on Terrorism Motorcycle Plate

The applicant must be a veteran and a member of the National Guard or military reserve, who served in a support role, either in the United States or overseas, in an area other than Iraq or Afghanistan.

Applicants must provide a copy of their DD214 that indicates they are a recipient of the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary or Service Medal. Applicants still on active duty must provide a letter from their commanding officer indicating that the applicant is still on active duty and is the recipient of the Expeditionary or Service Medal.

Gold Star Family License Plate Gold Star Family Motorcycle License Plate

Gold Star Family plates are available to the parent or spouse of a person who has died while honorably serving in active military service. General Information:

  • Only spouses and parents of the service member are eligible.
  • Applicants should plan to show some documentation regarding their eligibility, familial relation to the service member, and documentation of the service member’s casualty status. Applicants who do not have documentation should contact their local County Veterans Service Officer for assistance in obtaining documentation.
  • While the plates are subject to standard fees, there is no additional charge to issue or re-issue Gold Star plates. Funding is provided by the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs through Support Our Troops license plate contributions.

The applicant must have been stationed on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, or offshore during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. This is an embossed license plate.

Plates are available for Passenger vehicles and motorcycles.  There are no date-of-service or combat duty restrictions. The veteran must submit a copy of his or her DD214 showing that they were honorably discharged. A one-time $30 contribution is due at the time of initial application.

The applicant must be a member of the veteran service organization and at the time of application, must submit a copy of his or her membership card or the application may be signed by the Commissioner of Veteran Affairs.

Disabled Veteran plates do not offer disability parking privileges unless the owner also meets the criteria established for disability plates. If the vehicle owner meets the criteria for disability plates, they may obtain DAV plates with the disability emblem in place of one of the numbers in the plate number sequence.
