Veterans Day 2009
November 11 is Veterans Day, the national holiday dedicated to honoring all who have served in America’s armed forces.
It was originally known as Armistice Day because the armistice or temporary cessation of hostilities for World War I took effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For a complete history of Veterans Day, visit www1.va.gov/opa/vetsday/vetdayhistory.asp.

Minnesota State Veterans Day Program
In honor of all armed forces veterans of the United States of America, the Commanders Task Force and Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs is sponsoring the Minnesota State Veterans' Day Program at the Inver Grove Heights Veterans Memorial Community Center on November 11th. The keynote speaker will be Governor Pawlenty.

Car Wash
Nov 11 - Grace for Vets is sponsoring free car washes at participating car washes across the states. These washes will only be available on Veterans Day, rain or shine. At present there are four participating locations in Minnesota. The list is located at www.graceforvets.org/participating.php.
Duluth Grill
Nov 11 - The Duluth Grill in the Lincoln Park / West End neighborhood will be offering a free meal to Veterans all day.
Grand Casino
Nov 11 - On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, Grand Casino Mille Lacs and Grand Casino Hinckley will offer veterans and active Service men and women a free lunch at the Grand Buffet in appreciation of their service. Military personnel need to show a military ID card between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to receive the free buffet.
Golden Corral
Nov 16 - The 2009 Military Appreciation Monday dinner will be held on Monday, November 16, 2009 from 5 pm to 9 pm in all Golden Corral Restaurants. Visit www.goldencorral.com for locations.
The free dinner meal is a special "thank you tribute" to any person who has ever served in the United States Military. If you are a veteran, retired, currently serving, in the National Guard or Reserves, you are invited to join us for Golden Corral's Military Appreciation Monday dinner.
To date, Golden Corral restaurants have provided over 2.2 million free meals and contributed over $3.3 million to the Disabled American Veterans organization.

Nov 8 to 15 - Home improvement retailer Lowe’s Companies will offer a 10 percent discount to active-duty, National Guard and reserve members, retirees, veterans and their immediate family members, Nov. 8 through Nov. 15, in honor of Veterans Day. Customers must present a military ID card or other proof of service.
The Lowe’s discount can be used on purchases of up to $5,000, for a maximum discount of $500. It can be used only on purchases made in stores, and is not available for sales at Lowes.com. It does not apply to previous sales or purchases of services or gift cards.

MN Timberwolves Military Night
Nov 6 - On Friday, Nov. 6, the Minnesota Timberwolves, along with POPP.com, will honor current and former members of all branches of the Military during their game against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Nov 8 - Tee it up for the Troops and the Mall of America have provided free admission for families of deployed service members to enjoy a day at Nickelodeon Universe in the Mall of America on November 8th. Wrist bands can be picked up at a table near the admissions booth for the park between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Families must show military ID and have a copy of their service members deployment order. Up to 4 wrist bands will be provided per family. Only 1000 wrist bands are available and they are first come first serve.

Albert Lea
Nov 11 - Southwest Middle School students and Albert Lea’s local veterans organizations will present a public program on Wednesday at 8:15 am in the Southwest Middle School gymnasium. Students and members of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will present this 30-minute program to pay tribute to our nation’s veterans, past and present.
Superintendent Michael Funk, a lieutenant colonel in the Minnesota National Guard, will give a short address as guest speaker for the event. Members of Freeborn County’s local veterans organizations will participate in the presentation of the colors and honor guard. The Southwest eighth-grade band and seventh- and eighth-grade choirs will perform music they have been preparing especially for the program.
Funk also will speak at 11:00 am Wednesday at the annual Veterans Day program at the Freeborn County Courthouse inside the Freeborn County Courthouse in the Commissioner's Auditorium.
Arlington
Nov 11 - Sibley East High School will have a program at 10:45 am. The featured speaker will be Capt. Ryan Kelly from the 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery, MN National Guard.
Brooklyn Park
Nov 10 - On November 10th, North Hennepin Community College will be recognizing veterans day. From 10:00 am - 4:00 pm there will be displays, tables, and veteran students in our Campus Center.
A formal ceremony will start at 1pm. This ceremony will have the posting of the colors by the local VFW, recognition of veterans, student speakers, and the main event being Jon Hovde. Seating is limited (362), so those attending the ceremony would want to arrive early.
Jon Hovde is a Vietnam veteran that had two limbs severed in 1968 and was pronounced dead twice. He eventually went on to be president of the MN School Board Association and retired from 3M. He now speaks all over and is very inspiring. He was a student at NHCC only a year after he was pronounced dead!
The event will be a kick-off to our new Veteran Scholarship Fund. Scholarships will be given to veterans that are in need of help while at NHCC. Donations may be submitted at the event or they may contact Andy Levesque (763-493-0573) directly if they would like to donate but are unavailable to attend.

Crookston
Nov 11 - The University of Minnesota, Crookston invites the campus and community to honor veterans on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, beginning at 8:00 a.m. with a flag ceremony on the Campus Mall. A wreath will also be placed at the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial at the campus entrance. An honor guard from the U.S. Air Force ROTC Det. 610 from the University of North Dakota will also participate in the morning ceremonies. Refreshments will follow.
At 4:00 p.m., the U of M, Crookston Veteran’s Club will host Stuart Bass, a naval aviator in World War II, in Kiehle Auditorium. Bass fought in the Pacific and was awarded the Navy Cross, the second highest combat decoration our nation awards, for valor in action while flying a TBM Avenger torpedo bomber. He will discuss the carrier war, operations in the Pacific, and what it was like to fly the TBM. Everyone is welcome.
After the war, Bass returned to his home near Missoula, Mont., and attended the University of Montana. He worked for American Crystal Sugar Company for many years, and from 1974 until his retirement in 1986, he was vice president for the company.
All Veteran’s Day events on the campus are sponsored by the U of M, Crookston Veteran’s Club with assistance from the Student Affairs office.
Duluth
Nov 11 - The annual Duluth Veterans Day March begins at the Historic Duluth Armory, London Road and 13th Ave E at 9:30 am. The march ends at the St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center (Depot) at 10:30 am. The City of Duluth Veterans Day Ceremony will start at 11:00 am at the Depot.

Eagan
Nov 11 - The students, faculty, and staff of Eagan High School would like to cordially invite you to our 3rd Annual Veterans Day Recognition Assembly, November 11, 2009 at 9:00 A.M. in the main gymnasium of Eagan high school.
8:15 A.M. – A social hour with coffee, doughnuts and bagels provided by the EHS student government will be held in our student commons for veterans and their families.
9:00 A.M. – A 50-minute assembly will be held with military personnel from the United States Armed Services as well as the Eagan High School student body.
Those planning to attend the assembly but not the social hour prior are still requested to arrive at least 15 minutes before to the start of the program. Parking is plentiful and will be reserved for veterans in our lower student lot.

Sabathani Community Center Veterans Day Ceremony

Nov 10 - Dakota County Technical College will be hosting a Military Family Day on November 10, from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. Service providers from State and County Agencies will be available in the commons. The Armed Forces Recruiters will also be available. From noon until 1:00 pm, an Army Black Hawk Helicopter is scheduled to land at DCTC’s AMES Soccer Complex where you will be able to take a look inside and talk with the pilots.

Nov 11 - The 173rd Airborne Brigade Association, SSG John K. Weber Chapter will host a ceremony at the Vietnam Memorial in the State Capitol grounds starting at 11:00 am.

Nov 11 - There will be a program starting at 11:00 am at the Waseca County Courthouse. It will be followed by a lunch at American Legion Post 228.
White Bear Lake
Nov 11 - Dedication of Veterans' Monument at St John’s White Bear Lake Cemetery. The graves of many veterans who have faithfully served our country during times of peace and war lie in the first cemetery of White Bear Lake founded in 1861. The St John in the Wilderness Cemetery located at White Bear Avenue and South Shore Boulevard in White Bear Lake will be dedicating a new monument to all those who have served in the armed forces of the United States (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, & Merchant Marine). A portion of the memorial cost is being donated by the White Bear Lake American Legion, Schoenrock Monument Company, and Parker and Son’s Cemetery Services along with the parish of St John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church. On Veteran’s Day, Wednesday, November 11th at 2:00 pm we will have a service in the cemetery to dedicate this new marker, including a color guard and 21 gun salute. All are welcome to attend.
Willmar
Nov 9 to 11 - The 2009 Veteran's Day observance will include a display of the military collection of USMHC, and others for all three days. Over 5,000 items of military history will be on display from the Civil War through the present. The event is being held at the Willmar City Auditorium, 311 6th St SW.
